National Resilient Roads Cohort
Get free expert support to ensure your community's critical roadways are built to last.
To support resilient infrastructure in Canada's smaller communities, the CRIS in partnership with NAMS Canada and the AIM Network, is offering a specialized Call for Projects to provide local governments and First Nations with up to $20,000 of expert consulting support from a member of the CRIS roster to develop options to address climate change challenges for roads.
The NAMS/CRIS Resilient Roadways Cohort will assist local roads and public works departments to address climate change challenges that result in the following conditions:
- Chronic flooding, including bridge damages
- Roadway erosion due to storms, runoff, slopes and unstable soils
- Exposure to wildfire events
- Exposure to heave snowfall events
- Increasing road maintenance costs arising from increased temperatures, including permafrost melt
Examples of eligible infrastructure projects can include road expansion, reconstruction, or upgrades for roads, bridges and tunnels.
Eligibility
To be eligible for CRIS support, projects must serve Canadian communities of under or around 30, 000 people, and be included in a multi-year capital plan, Council approved, or formally endorsed by a senior decision-making authority.
Each participating community can receive:
- Up to 60 hours of technical guidance
- Custom report & council presentation
- Options analysis, costing, and funding alignment

Resilient Roads Cohort
No. Participation is completely free for eligible local governments. The Cohort is fully funded through the Climate Ready Infrastructure Service (CRIS) program, delivered by the Canadian Urban Institute and funded by the Government of Canada.
Through the project, your community will benefit from FREE personalized, one-on-one consulting to:
- Identify risks & road upgrade priorities
- Review resilient designs, materials and nature-based solutions
- Evaluate stormwater, water and sewer systems
- Align with grant funding opportunities
We are seeking municipal infrastructure projects that impact a roadway or transit corridor. Examples of eligible infrastructure projects can include road expansion, reconstruction, or upgrades for roads, bridges and tunnels.
Eligible participants must be Canadian local government or First Nation community and serving populations of 30,000 or fewer; and who own, operate, or manage the critical road and underlying service networks. The submitted infrastructure project must be either; included in a multi-year capital plan, approved by Council, or it has received formal written endorsement from a senior decision-maker.
The entire cohort is delivered virtually to maximize flexibility and minimize time away from day-to-day operations.
